Vitamin B2 is also known as riboflavin and was discovered in 1930. It is a water-soluble vitamin that is provided to our body through diet. Rich sources of riboflavin are found in milk, cheese, beef, eggs and whole grains. Nevertheless, 22% of women and 12% of men receive lower amounts than the recommended intake. If riboflavin deficiency increases, it can cause erosions and sores in the corners of the mouth, as well as tearing, burning and itching in the eyes.
Riboflavin is involved in the conversion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates into energy. It also helps in the restoration and maintenance of the mucous membranes and participates in the production of red blood cells. Furthermore, the production of thyroid hormones depends on the presence of riboflavin as does the production of immune system cells.
Riboflavin is actively involved in the body’s processes that produce some of the antioxidants that protect cells from the harmful effects of free radicals, which is why riboflavin is believed to be important for maintaining eye health.
