Use

Thiamine is also known as Vitamin B1 and is the first B complex vitamin to be discovered. Our body cannot produce thiamine for this and it must be taken in through the diet, from food sources such as whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Because it is a water-soluble product and is not stored in the body, it is very likely to cause a deficiency in the body, either when one’s diet is very poor, or due to a reduced appetite, or due to a diet rich in processed foods.

Mild thiamine deficiency in the body can occur in the elderly for the reasons mentioned above, although thiamine is added to white flour to avoid these deficiencies. Thiamine levels may be depleted due to long-term treatment with diuretics and is often given to patients undergoing treatment for alcoholism. One of the most important roles that thiamine plays in our body is the enzymatic release of energy from carbohydrates.

In addition it plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of the nervous system, as it is vital for the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

In the form of co-enzyme Thiamin Pyrophosphate is necessary for many metabolic functions as well as for the removal of Carbon Dioxide and decarboxylation of Alpha-Keto acids.

Thiamine works in synergy with other B-complex vitamins, namely Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and Niacin (Vitamin B3).
