Free radicals are harmful molecules that are produced in our body either as a result of normal metabolic reactions or from daily activities such as exposure to air pollution and ultraviolet radiation. The body has protective mechanisms (antioxidant systems) to neutralize free radicals.

Many antioxidants are nutrients that we get through our diet. The effectiveness of each antioxidant is measured in units of Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC). Of particular interest is the fact that some of the active ingredients in herbs (especially phenolic compounds) are much more effective in neutralizing free radicals than the antioxidant vitamins C and E.
